Pius XI Community Day Recap

Thank you for your ongoing support in every effort to strengthen our school community and continue our successes. It is an investment that lasts a lifetime!

The day began with an inspirational reflection from Faith Formation director, Mr. Coffey, followed by the goals for the day from the ever-engaging Theology teacher, Mr. McCauley. After the extraordinary team of Mr. Carpenter and Mr. Reeves announced the raffle winners, we proceeded to our TACs. Then, we walked in the Field House and participated in team-building activities led by Global Youth Leadership Institute (GYLI) in the Union and second-floor gym. Closing reflection was led by Social Science teacher, Mr. Claassen. Special thanks to Matt Nink and GYLI, Beth Krey, Patty HupferRiedel, and Rick Carpenter for planning the important day.

The outcome for the fundraising portion was $22,000. Special thanks to an alum for a $10,000 donation! There was a 52% participation level by the students, not enough to earn the free day, but we are so grateful to every student who worked hard to make the day a success. Every penny goes to scholarships. We look forward to next year's Walk-a-thon and Community Day.

Six Pius XI Juniors Advance in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program

Congratulations to Olivia Dobbs, Keldan Mulvey, George N Nink, Sahar Safavi, Rebecca Vaclav and Kevin Wackman on advancing in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students are among the highest scoaring participants of some 1.5 million PSAT testers.

Pius XI Lady Popes Win State Championship!

Congratulations to our Lady Popes Basketball Team and program for their achievement in winning the WIAA State Championship game in Madison Saturday, March 27, 2010. Topping off sixteen successive wins in the season, beating the Greater Metro Conference champs, the sectional finals teams, and then the Big Eight title holder, Pius XI went on to end a public state title string and finish off the team ranked first in state.

We couldn't be prouder of our team, our students, our staff, our fans, alums, supporters.

Pius XI Excels at State Pronunciation Contest

On Saturday, February 27^th the state level Spanish and French Pronunciation Contests were held at Pius XI. Schools from around the state of Wisconsin traveled to participate in reciting memorized poetry, memorized narration, theatre, impromptu reading or impromptu conversation. A special congratulations to our Pius XI State of Wisconsin Spanish Pronunciation Competition 1^st place winners: Josh Levin, Victor Hernandez, Daisy Falcon, Cynthia Esparza, Ana Solano, Georgie Nink, Cecilia Clark, Kelson Zbiorski, Mario Gomez and Kelsey Clark.

Rube Goldberg Competition News

Congratulations to the Pius XI Rube Goldberg team on placing 2nd Overall in the 2010 Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. The team also won Best Design, Best Construction, Best Technical Writing and the Peer Award. Below are links to local coverage of the event.

Regional Scholastic Art Competition News

Pius XI is proud to announce that our students received 38 individual awards. 16 students received Gold Key awards for their portfolios, 15 students received Gold Key awards for their individual work, 6 students received Silver Keys for their individual work and one student received the American Vision Award, given only to the top five pieces in the entire show. Gold Key award winners now will further submit their work to the national competition. In addition, their work will be displayed in the Milwaukee Art Museum until March 21. Congratulations to all!

Reminder - School Closings/Snow Day Policy

School Closings: Typically, Pius XI High School follows the decision of the Milwaukee Public Schools to close due to inclement weather. However, in some instances, Pius XI High School may find it necessary to close even if the Milwaukee Public Schools do not. When this occurs, we will have announcements made on WTMJ Channel 4, radio stations WTMJ and WISN and will be visible on the Pius XI High School website and on the answering machine at 414-290-7000.

If the weather seems bad and no announcement is made, Pius XI High School will be in session. You should then decide if your student should come to school.

When unscheduled closings occur, the following procedure will be followed:

The next day back will carry the same letter day as the day off (except for a STAR day, see bold below). For example, if a C-day is canceled, the next day back will be a C-day.

The next letter day – D-day in the example above – will be dropped from the cycle, and the cycle will continue as shown on the calendar for that time – E-day in the example above.

An exception to the above will be made for a STAR-day. If a STAR-day is canceled, the next day back will be the next letter day. For example if B-day is a STAR-day and we are closed the next day back will be a C-day.

Important Information About Swine Flu and Pius XI High School

Keeping our school community healthy and safe is our highest priority at Pius XI High School. Our administrative team will be in contact and work closely with the Milwaukee Health Department to assist in preparing for any future cases associated with Pius XI. Our cleaning and maintenance service will do everything they can to maintain a hygienic and disinfected building, including desks and chairs. At this time, everyone should follow the recommendations from public health officials:

All students, teachers, and administrators who have flu-like symptoms should stay home.
Coughing and sneezing should be contained by covering the nose and mouth.
Proper and frequent hand washing and hand-hygiene techniques should be followed.
Common sense and good hygiene are critical.

If you have the symptoms of flu: fever, cough, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue please contact your physician.
