FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE

Knowing that students learn in different ways, and that certain subjects are better understood in a variety of settings and structural arrangements, Pius XI offers a flexible schedule that provides students with multiple pathways to learning.

This flexible schedule is constructed over a five-day cycle (A-Day through E-Day), and features 16 "mods" per day. Class time is designed to run one to two mods on given days of the cycle and may include resource time and "P-mods" (see detail below). In addition, E-Day is a shortened day of the cycle, allowing structured time for staff development and planning.

Pius XI’s innovative flexible schedule is based on the beliefs that:
  • The student is at the center of the learning process.
  • Learning is not just a cognitive process, but highly personal.
  • Students learn in different ways.

In an effort to support our students in developing as academically strong, compassionate, independent and responsible learners, we engage in three distinct modes of learning:

  • Classroom
  • Permanent Mods (p-mods)
  • Resource
Classroom

Class meets two, three or four times per cycle, generally covering six to eight mods. This time allows for activities best suited for whole group learning and provides a foundation for the course. Additionally, class may involve the presentation of new material or skills.

Permanent Mods

P-mods allow for activities that are best suited to individual or small-group work. Specifically, it provides opportunities to:
  • Develop personal relationships
  • Deepen, reinforce and enrich student understanding
  • Assess for student understanding
Resource Mods

Resource is designed for students to grow as independent learners. Students work on their own, seeking resources, such as teachers, technology, other students or materials.

Four Year Planning allows students to customize their high school experience to include requirements and interests. For example, a student interested in engineering can take courses in Project Lead the Way.
