Pius XI High School and Present Music present Buffalo Nation (Bison bison)
Buffalo Nation (Bison bison) is a piece of theatrical music created by composer and Milwaukee native, Jerome Kitzke and librettist, Kathleen Masterson. Through music and text the work will illuminate the huge, varied, and largely unsung story of the American Bison from pre-history to present time, including the herd’s late 19th century decimation.  This story, which is simultaneously tragic and redemptive, ecological and social, was inspired from historical records, contemporary ecological writings, contemporary fiction, aural histories of the Great Plains Indian Nations, and from imagination.

A solo singer, actors, sound effects chorus, and instrumentalists will bring their voices to bear in representing not only the human characters, but the bison as well. According to Kitzke and Masterson, “As American creative artists, we have always been acutely aware of the non-static quality of history, and that the way we now live on this land is directly connected to the way we historically came to live on it. This piece will reflect that belief, and though the story it tells is an emotionally difficult one, it will, we believe, be one of redemption as well.”

Performed by Present Music, PIUS XI High School Choir, Norman Moses, Joel Kopischke, Alison Mary Forbes, Lisa Golda, and Kurt Ollmann.

The Phantom of the Opera features music by Andrew Lloyd Weber and is based on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux. It tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command. Its sensational score includes "Think of Me," "Angel of Music," "Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Masquerade" and the title song.

The winner of seven 1988 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, The Phantom of the Opera has been seen by over 100 million people in 144 cities in 27 countries. On January 9, 2006, it became the longest-running show in Broadway history. The musical celebrated an unprecedented milestone on January 26, 2008, when it reached its twentieth anniversary on Broadway. It is currently in its 23rd year at Broadways Majestic Theatre, and in its 24th year at London's Her Majesty Theatre, both of which continue to play with no end in sight. The original London and Broadway productions are produced by The Really Useful Theatre Company Ltd. and Cameron Mackintosh and are directed by theatre legend Harold Prince.

Performing Arts Winter Gala scheduled

It’s an exciting time for performing arts at Pius XI – after many years, construction for the Father Robert Carney Performing Arts Center is underway and we are close to having a beautiful new home for the arts.

We invite you to help us celebrate the performing arts at Pius XI at the Performing Arts Winter Gala, a fundraising event to benefit Student Productions. The evening will feature entertainment, a reception and a silent auction held at the Sunset Playhouse on January 7 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. This gala will financially support the many concerts, plays, musicals and other events involving the performing arts.

In addition to your attendance we are seeking auction donations with a fine arts theme. We are interested in artwork including paintings, glassworks, pottery, fiber arts, photography and jewelry. Tickets for performing arts events, especially tickets for theater or musical theater productions are popular auction items.

For more information, please visit us online at www.piusxi.org/performingarts, or contact Patrick Schley ’06 at pschley@firststage.org with any questions.
