For the adolescent, physical activity can improve academic performance, reduce social adjustment problems and increase self-esteem.
Pius' fitness and wellness program emphasizes enjoyable participation whereby students gain sufficient knowledge to pursue healthy and active lifestyles. Students learn about the health benefits of their physical activity, how to set individual health and fitness goals, and to become motivated to be physically fit for a lifetime.
In the context of physical activities, students also learn the value of respect for self and others, as well as the value of trust. Emphasis is place on how to play the game and how to interact, rather than winning and losing.
Students will notice improved cardio-respiratory endurance, flexibility and muscular strength. Goals are set on an individual level. All classes are coeducational.
The Fitness & Wellness Program is designed to:
- Cultivate your understanding of the importance of life-long fitness, wellness and nutrition.
- Give you the ability to understand your body and the ramifications of decisions that affect the body.
- Develop success and confidence with plans for proactive fitness, wellness and healthy lifestyles, tailored to the needs of the individual learner
- Be taken for four years, although only two years are required by state law, including Health. We recommend that you see your coursework not in terms of credit hours, but instead as something you pursue seven days a week, developing the skills, creating the routine and acquiring the discipline for a healthy lifestyle.
- Allow you to receive hands-on experience and feedback on your own personal health and fitness through the use of heart-rate monitors.
