How Can Your Gift to the Annual Fund Make a Difference in Student’s Lives?
The Annual Fund enables Pius XI High School to provide every student with innovative, quality programs that cultivate God-given gifts in purposeful ways. Jacob Garst’s story illustrates the Pius XI difference:
Jacob Garst’s great desire to learn was compromised by his disability. Jacob has dysgraphia, a neurological condition characterized by writing difficulties. Unfortunately, before coming to Pius XI High School, Jacob received no accommodations to help him learn—the opportunity to take notes on a computer, additional time for taking tests, a quiet space in which to study.
Fortunately, at Pius XI High School, Jacob discovered the pathways to achieve his dreams:
- “Anne Findlay and Joanna Nicholson of the Special Studies Program really understood my disability and advocated for me with my regular teachers. I was able to schedule times to take tests, get help with my homework and always had a quiet place to study.”
- “Freshman year, I took a class taught by my TAC teacher, Kevin Schwartz, which really opened up my eyes. He helped me see I have a responsibility to be engaged in my own learning—which is something I carried with me into college.”
- “My favorite class was U.S. History taught by Joel Claassen. His teaching style was based on verbal interaction with the students, which really helped facts stick in my brain. This class helped me learn in a way that fit my way of remembering and processing facts.”
- “I volunteered in the Pius XI computer lab which really sparked my interest in computers and helped me choose my current career path.”
Today, Jacob is a proud 2004 graduate of Pius XI High School, and is completing his senior year at UW-Whitewater. He landed a prestigious internship last summer with the Office of Networking and Telecommunication Operations in the Department of Commerce in Washington DC. He will graduate this spring, and anticipates a career in information technology.
Like Jacob, every Pius XI student is supported in a culture that unites care and academic rigor. It is in this kind of environment that future leaders and difference-makers begin to come into their own. Consequently, at Pius XI we not only prepare students to succeed in college, we prepare them to succeed in life.
As an educational community, we need you and we rely on your presence and support to fulfill our mission. We invite you to partner in our mission by making a gift to the Pius XI Annual Fund today.
