Pius XI Catholic High School Phone-Free Space
To provide a safe and beneficial learning environment for all Popes, Pius XI will be transitioning to a “phone-free space.”
While we believe that cellular devices (phones, smart watches, etc.) have great utility, we also have found that learning and social behavior improve drastically when students are fully engaged with their teachers and classmates. Reducing the use of cellular devices in the school setting is known to improve learning and boost the social/emotional well-being of students.
Pius XI will be using a system called Yondr to transition to a phone-free space. Yondr has been implemented in over 2,000 schools across 16 countries to help create the best learning environments for students. The Yondr Program utilizes a simple, secure pouch that stores a phone. Every student will secure their phone in a personally assigned Yondr pouch when they arrive at school. Students will maintain possession of their phones and will not use them until their pouches are opened at the end of the school day. Students are required to bring their Yondr pouch to and from school each day and are responsible for their pouch at all times. Yondr is a proven tool in eliminating the distractions that come with cell phones and other “smart” devices. To eliminate distractions and increase engagement many industries are choosing to go “phone-free.” In addition to educational spaces, performing arts centers, concert venues, professional conferences, and judicial centers have relied on Yondr to achieve this goal.
