Milwaukee Baseball Runs Through Pius XI

As the Milwaukee Brewers prepare to open the World Series on Friday, October 23 (after a 44 year hiatus) Pope Nation has a few extra reasons to cheer. Three Pius XI alumni share special connections to Milwaukee baseball, with stories that span generations, championship memories and decades of work behind the scenes.

For Randy Olewinski ’76, Tony Migliaccio ’81 and Terry Sheahan ’59, baseball has been much more than a spectator sport. It has meant lifelong relationships, opportunities to serve others and a place in the story of a city that loves its teams.

Randy Olewinski ’76: Keeping the Ballpark Safe

As Senior Director of Security for the Milwaukee Brewers, Randy Olewinski helps create an environment where players, employees and fans can enjoy the game safely.

His connection to the organization began after graduating from Concordia University. Randy started working in Brewers security and continued part-time throughout a 27-year career in law enforcement. After retiring from the Franklin Police Department, he became the club’s first full-time Director of Security.

Today, his responsibilities include developing security strategies that protect the organization’s people, facilities and operations. While ballpark views and access to player tunnels and dugouts are memorable perks, Randy describes the relationships—with players, staff, outside agencies and fans—as one of the most rewarding parts of his work.

That emphasis on teamwork has deep roots at Pius XI. A member of the school’s 1976 state championship boys basketball team, Randy credits his coaches and teachers with showing him how to support others. He later returned to coach in the Pius XI boys basketball program for 20 years, passing those lessons along to new generations of Popes.

Tony Migliaccio ’81: A Lifetime Behind the Scenes

Tony Migliaccio’s Brewers story began when he was just 15 years old. As a Pius XI freshman, he took a job as a batboy and clubhouse attendant. Nearly five decades later, he continues to help keep the organization running as Director of Clubhouse Operations.

His work touches many of the details that make a major league season possible. Tony and his staff coordinate travel, rental cars, housing, equipment and clubhouse needs for players, coaches and support personnel throughout a season lasting more than seven months.

Asked about his favorite part of the job in our Examen alumni feature, Tony offered a simple answer: “Helping people!”

He also reflected on the people who helped him. After losing a parent during his freshman year, Tony found support from Pius XI teachers and Catholic priests. He remains grateful for that care and credits his Pius XI education with instilling values that have stayed with him throughout his life. Terry Sheahan ’59: Memories of Milwaukee’s 1957 Championship

Long before Tony stepped into a Brewers clubhouse, another young Pope was experiencing Milwaukee baseball up close.

Terry Sheahan was a 15-year-old Pius XI student working as the visiting teams’ batboy at County Stadium during the Milwaukee Braves’ 1957 championship season. A friendship with a fellow student whose father worked in the Braves’ front office helped him land the job, which paid $2.50 a day.

Nearly seven decades later, Terry still treasures those memories—and a bat signed by members of the 1957 team. In a recent FOX6 interview, he shared stories of that remarkable season and his excitement about watching the Brewers bring the World Series back to Milwaukee.

Two Popes who started as 15-year-old batboys, decades apart. Another who has devoted years to keeping the Brewers community safe. Together, their stories remind us that the people behind the game help make its biggest moments possible.

As Milwaukee gets ready for the first pitch, we’re proud to celebrate these alumni and the dedication, service and love of baseball that connect them.

Let's Go Popes! Let's Go Brewers!
