Mayor Cavalier Johnson Visits Pius XI!

It was an exciting day at Pius XI as we welcomed Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson to campus for a morning of conversation, connection, and a little bit of hands-on learning this week!
Mayor Johnson began his visit on September 8, 2026 with a discussion with President Tom Mlada, Principal Ryan Krienke, Assistant Principal LaKendra Brown, and Board Chair Joan Shafer ‘71. Together, they talked about the important role that education plays in strengthening Milwaukee and how Pius XI's nearly 100-year history has positively impacted the city. They also discussed forecasted trends in employment, as well as workforce development opportunities and the important need to introduce students to the many different options available to them post-high school—from four-year colleges to technical education and careers in the skilled trades.
Then, it was time to see our students in action!
The first stop was a visit to our brand-new Applied Learning Lab (ALL), where Mr. Horky’s computer science students demonstrated some of what they have been learning. This new space is designed to bring classroom concepts to life through hands-on, collaborative experiences. Equipped with ten 3D printers, a CNC mill, a router, and more, the lab will initially support engineering and science courses before expanding into other areas including the arts.

Next, Mayor Johnson visited Mrs. Hupfer-Riedel’s chemistry lab, where he had the chance to get hands-on with an experiment demonstrating the changes in thermochromic materials when heat is applied.
The visit concluded in Ms. Talsky’s ‘81 AP U.S. History class, where Mayor Johnson spoke directly to students– encouraging them to follow their passions and find ways to take action in their own communities. This message connects beautifully with our mission to help students discover their gifts and use them in service to others.
Before he left, we made sure to invite Mayor Johnson back for POPESFEST later this month!
