Popes Fall in Offensive Shootout at St. Catherine's, 5-4
The Pius XI boys soccer team was part of an offensive showcase on the road Wednesday, falling to Racine St. Catherine's 5-4 in a back-and-forth conference battle at Pritchard Park.

Both teams traded goals throughout the match in what turned into one of the highest-scoring games of the season for either side. The Popes pushed hard until the final whistle, but St. Catherine's came out on top in the nine-goal affair.

It was the kind of game that tests a team's resilience — four goals on the road against a quality conference opponent is no small feat, even in a loss. The Popes will look to bounce back and carry that offensive energy into their next matchup.

Meet Coach Mazza
My name is Ryan Mazza, and I'm excited to join the Pius XI Boys Soccer program as the new Head Coach — helping develop student-athletes both on and off the field.
Playing & Coaching Background
I graduated from Brookfield East High School before continuing my soccer career at Wisconsin Lutheran College, where I competed at the collegiate level. After my playing career, I coached at Brookfield East High School before returning to Wisconsin Lutheran College, where I served as Head Assistant Coach during the 2024–25 season.
I've also coached at Elmbrook United, where I was fortunate to help our teams achieve real success — including the US Youth Soccer President's Cup in 2025 and the Wisconsin State Cup in 2026, earning a trip to the US Youth Soccer National Championships.

I believe in creating a competitive, positive environment where players are challenged to grow as athletes, teammates, and leaders. I'm passionate about player development, building strong team culture, and helping every player reach their full potential.

The Popes have made multiple appearances in WIAA regional and sectional tournaments, demonstrating their ability to compete at the highest levels of Wisconsin high school soccer. Their success reflects the program's commitment to technical development, tactical awareness, and physical conditioning.

The team's achievements extend beyond wins and losses, as the program has produced numerous All-Conference selections, academic all-state honorees, and student-athletes who have continued their soccer careers at the collegiate level.
