The Title IX Impact Award honors the women whose early leadership and involvement in Pius XI athletic programs helped lay the foundation for girls’ sports.

Before formal girls’ teams were established, these clubs and groups provided meaningful opportunities for participation and leadership within the school’s athletic programs. They created space for young women to contribute in visible and impactful ways, strengthening both competition and community.

 

These women were not spectators on the sidelines, but active contributors who

organized events, recorded history, energized crowds, and elevated the overall athletic experience.

 

Base Buddies recorded stats and kept score at baseball games 1977-1993*

 

Cheerleaders energized crowds and represented Pius XI in competitions 1944-present*

 

Mat Maids tracked points and assisted at wrestling meets/tournaments 1970-1995*

 

Pom Pons danced at halftime and showcased their talent at competitions 1975-present*

 

Trackettes timed athletes and officiated field events in track & field 1970-1985*

 

Yardliners documented football plays with accuracy and consistency 1976-1991*

In 1972, the passage of Title IX marked a national shift toward equitable opportunity in education and athletics. By the fall of 1973, Pius XI established its first official girls’ athletic teams. It was a milestone built upon the leadership and visibility these women had already demonstrated.

Through the Title IX Impact Award, we honor the pioneering vision and lasting impact these women have had on generations of student athletes at Pius XI.

​

The opportunities available to young women in our athletic programs today stand as a testament to their early leadership. Their influence remains woven into the culture and future of Pius XI athletics.
