RECRUITING QUESTIONS?
Building Bridges to Collegiate Athletics
At Pius XI Catholic High School, our commitment to student-athlete development extends beyond their high school careers. We recognize that for many of our talented athletes, competing at the collegiate level is both a goal and an opportunity to continue their athletic journey while pursuing higher education. Our coaching staff and athletic department are dedicated to supporting this transition through education, guidance, and resources.
NAVIGATING THE RECRUITING LANDSCAPE
The college athletic recruiting process can seem complex and overwhelming for student-athletes and their families. Understanding the different collegiate athletic associations, their requirements, and recruitment timelines is essential for those hoping to compete at the next level.
Pius XI athletes have successfully continued their athletic careers across all collegiate levels—from NCAA Division I, II, and III programs to NAIA institutions and junior colleges. Each path offers unique opportunities, athletic experiences, and academic environments that can align with our graduates' diverse goals and aspirations.
NCAA PATHWAYS
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the largest and most recognized governing body for collegiate athletics, with three distinct divisions offering different levels of competition, scholarship opportunities, and time commitments.
To compete at NCAA institutions, student-athletes must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center and meet specific academic requirements, including core course completion, minimum GPA standards, and standardized test scores. The recruitment process typically begins during sophomore or junior year, though timelines can vary by sport and division.
NAIA OPPORTUNITIES
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) comprises nearly 250 colleges and universities across North America. NAIA schools often provide excellent athletic competition with a stronger focus on balancing academics and athletics than some NCAA programs.
NAIA institutions can offer athletic scholarships and typically have their own eligibility requirements through the NAIA Eligibility Center. These schools often provide outstanding opportunities for student-athletes seeking competitive athletics within a supportive campus community.
JUNIOR COLLEGE PATHWAYS
The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) offers another pathway for student-athletes, providing opportunities to compete while attending two-year institutions. This route can be an excellent option for those looking to develop athletically and academically before transferring to four-year programs.
ESSENTIAL RESOURCES
To help our student-athletes navigate the recruiting journey, we recommend the following resources:
-
NCAA Eligibility Center
The official registration portal for NCAA eligibility certification -
NCAA Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete
Comprehensive information about NCAA requirements and the recruiting process -
NAIA Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete

National Junior College Athletic Association
Resources for student-athletes exploring junior college opportunities
START EARLY, STAY INFORMED
The most successful recruiting journeys begin with early planning and consistent communication. We encourage our student-athletes to begin exploring collegiate opportunities during their sophomore year, maintain strong academic performance throughout high school, and communicate regularly with their Pius XI coaches about their collegiate aspirations.
